Which kind of work targets which visual skill?

In short

No single exercise solves everything in vision training; each method touches a different skill. Knowing which skill your plan targets also tells you where to look for progress.

Vision training concerns not one skill but a connected set of them. So the question of which exercise is better has no single answer; the right question is which skill is being targeted.

This article sorts the common types of work by the skill they aim at, to make the plan your doctor gave you easier to understand.

Visual acuity: resolving detail

Target: raising the weaker eye's ability to distinguish fine detail.

The first and non-negotiable step here is correct optical correction. After that come methods that force active use of the weaker eye: patching and atropine drops are the classic members of this group.

Progress is tracked with the visual acuity measurement at an exam.

Suppression: both eyes present in perception

Target: getting the brain to weigh the weaker eye's signal again.

The setup that aims at this directly is dichoptic: content is split between the eyes and the task is only completed with both contributing. The contrast balance is adjusted to make room in perception for the weaker eye's signal.

Progress is tracked with suppression tests at an exam, and it often shifts before acuity does.

Alignment and focusing coordination: positioning together

Target: the eyes being able to meet at the same point at different distances, and to hold it.

Classic orthoptic work provides the tools here: the Brock string, pencil push-ups and similar convergence exercises. They come to the fore in pictures like convergence insufficiency.

Progress is tracked with the near point measurement and assessment of the eyes' teamwork.

Fusion and depth: two images becoming one

Target: the two eye images merging into one perception, and depth information arising from it.

This skill is supported by work in which both eyes operate at the same time, together; methods that exercise one eye do not produce that experience.

Progress is tracked with stereo tests and fusion assessments.

Eye movements: tracking and scanning

Target: following a moving target smoothly and navigating confidently between lines while reading.

Pursuit work such as the Marsden ball and structured scanning exercises sit here. They come up especially with children who report reading difficulty.

Reading your plan

Look at the plan your doctor gave you through this lens: which skill is targeted, and which measurement will track it? Knowing those two answers means looking for progress in the right place.

A plan may target more than one skill at once; that is normal and depends on the picture.

Fusion
The two eye images merging into one perception in the brain.
Pursuit movements
